Introduction to Tower Crane:
The lifting and moving of heavy objects like steel, concrete, and building materials is done by tower cranes, which are robust machines used on construction sites. Large-scale projects like building high-rises, bridges, and dams depend on them.

A tower or central mast, a horizontal boom or jib, a trolley and a counterweight make up a tower crane. Up to 265 feet tall, the mast is typically constructed of steel sections. The mast holds the 230-foot-long jib, which is attached to it. The counterweight balances the load's weight while the trolley moves along the jib while lifting and moving objects.
Construction Of Tower Crane:
Tower crane construction involves a number of steps and calls for qualified engineers and technicians. The fundamental steps in building a tower crane are listed below.
construction of Tower Crane |
Base: Building a solid foundation and base for the crane to sit on is the first step in building a tower crane. Typically, a concrete base is poured and fastened to a steel anchor by digging a hole in the ground.
Mast or Tower: After laying the foundation, the mast or tower is built. High-strength steel pieces that are bolted together on site typically form the mast. The maximum height of the building being constructed determines the mast's height.
Counter jib: The counter jib is on the opposite side of the mast from the jib , it holds the engine and the counterweights.
Counterweights: Counterweights are necessary because the load lifted by the jib exerts a torque which without an appropriate counterweight would damage the structure of the crane.
Trolley: The trolley responsible for lifting and moving the load , runs along the jib.
Electrical Control System: The electrical and control systems that enable the crane to be operated safely and effectively must be installed as the last stage.
How Tower Crane Setup:
When a tower crane is set up, the first parts are assembled with the help of another crane . Then the crane ' builds itself ' , as shown in the animation.Such cranes are called self - erecting cranes.
The product of the length of the lever arm and the load weight is the torque . If this exceeds a certain limit , the structure of the crane may be damaged , the jib may break or the crane may tilt . Thus the heavier the load , the smaller the radius.
